SMG has a simple mission which has guided us for 25 years
-Deliver High Quality Service
To solve problems, help our clients accomplish their goals, leave things better than we found them, and have a great place to work.
Scott R. Smith founded SMG in 1989 to focus on environmental management issues facing industry and business in the US and Canada. At that time, Scott had been solving industry water and air issues for more than 15 years. Over time we added industrial hygiene, health & safety services to support our clients. Along the way, we translated our ability to connect with government, both on the regulatory side and in the legislative arena, to build a government services practice. As energy has become so important to us all, we have learned to solve problems and find practical, environmentally sound solutions to the increasing need for energy, and requirements to manage air emissions. After tackling specific issues, we developed successful EHS management and sustainability programs at the facility and corporate level.
We have worked in Kentucky and the surrounding states on a frequent basis, and have worked in every Canadian Province, over 35 states, Mexico and several Central American countries, in addition to Taiwan and Indonesia.
In 2004, Scott Smith left SMG to become the Chief of Staff for Kentucky’s Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet. Through that experience, he solidified our relationship with the regulatory community in Kentucky and surrounding states, and at EPA Region IV and EPA headquarters. Since returning in 2006, he has focused on energy and water projects and government relations.
SMG operates under the direction of Clayton T. Whitney, President; Kyle Hagen, Engineering Services Manager and Karen Thompson, Environmental Services Manager. These three people have a combined 75 years of experience working in industry and regulatory agencies developing solutions and resolving complex environmental issues.
